It’s hard to believe, as I sit here and look out at the back garden bathed in sunlight, that there was frost on the ground until almost 10am. I wonder when I’ll ever wake up to a warm morning.
With the holiday months stretching out ahead, it’s time to make a plan of action for the summer or else it’ll have flashed by and I’ll have done nothing.
The front garden suffered badly from the harsh winter. We lost two beautiful large shrubs as a result of the frost. I waited to see would they make some sort of miraculous recovery, but there’s not a sign of them coming to life so up they’ll have to come up.
We made a good start with the painting last weekend when we started on Bee’s room. We hadn’t touched it since we moved in two years ago, except to clean it up a bit so an overhaul was much needed.
When we first moved in we’d shoved the old kitchen dresser into her room, partly because there was nowhere else to put it, and partly because we thought it might give her somewhere to store stuff. But, the only purpose it served was to clutter her room more because of the space it took up.
The Friday before last, herself and Ally were gone to Kildare. I was on my way to bed that night and I glanced into the room and thought to myself ‘This has to change’. Bee been in such a hurry to get out of the house that stuff had been scattered everywhere – the room looked like a herd of elephants had stampeded through it!
I called Jay. “What are you doing tomorrow?”, I asked.
“Erm….nothing”, he said.
“That’s great”, I said. ” I think we’ll start on Bee’s room tomorrow”.
He was delighted….I could tell…
“She’ll be so surprised” I said “She’ll be delighted!!”
The following morning, while I proceeded to empty Bee’s room, Jay went to Woody’s and bought a wooden floor.
I hate carpet with a vengeance – ever since the time I rented a house and had the lovely job of pulling up a horrible, smelly, flowery carpet that had obviously been on the floor since the year dot! When I pulled it up there was so much dust and dirt trapped underneath that I was sickened! This house has carpets throughout, but this is the second room now that we’ve put a wooden floor into – Ally’s room was the first. Our room will have to wait for a while.
It took a full day to clear out the room, give it two coats of paint, and then nothing would do me but while I had the paintbrush in my hand I had to paint ALL the doors and skirtings in the house. It was Sunday afternoon before Jay could lay the floor.
We thought we’d never have the room done in time. We worked all weekend and finally finished around 5 or 6 o’clock on Monday evening.
Even Ozzie and Toffee looked happier.
She was home no more than an hour after we’d have finished. We knew she’d be surprised. We knew she’d be delighted! We stood behind her as she opened the door to her bedroom.
She stood, for what seemed like ages, just staring at everything with her mouth open, then turned and said:
“Where are all my Tokio Hotel posters????”
Our turn to do the open mouth thing!
The pictures and posters are slowly reappearing.
I’ll be starting on the kitchen this week and am very much open to suggestions as to what I should do with these dark kitchen units. I don’t want to change the kitchen just yet so I’m considering painting the presses. If anyone else has done this or has any tips or advice, then please let me know.
