37 of 365 pix – Holy Year Cross, Clonmel

Meanwhile….on the 365 pix project…

My camera lens is FUBARED. At some stage it must have gotten a hard knock.  The  filter is wedged well and truly on, and there’s something rattling around inside which results in the focus ring jamming every so often. It’s a matter of (a long) time before I can afford a new one but all donations are greatly received in the meantime. 😉

I’m quite a bit behind with the whole 365 project, not because of the camera, but partly due to putting in some work for my Honours Degree (4 years finished….finally), and partly because a close family member wasn’t well over the last few months and I had to do a bit of running around to hospitals, doctors, etc.

With another close family member undergoing hospital treatment at the moment, I thought it was as good a time as any to visit The Holy Cross in Clonmel. I’m not very religious or anything, but I feel that God must be able to hear a prayer or two when it’s said at the top of a hill under a great, big holy cross.

The Holy Year Cross

Holy Year Cross

Situated at the base of the Comeraghs, at the top of ‘Cnoc a Chomortais’, the Holy Year Cross was erected in 1950.  Every year, on the August Bank Holiday, locals make the short climb to the top of the hill where mass is said.

I say ‘short climb’, but the truth is that the small space for cars to park at the base of the hill is VERY small, so for anyone who turns up late, then a longer walk is involved…and possibly a visit to A&E, suffering from exhaustion, before you ever make it to the cross.

34 of 365 pix – Rathronan Protestant Church ruin, Clonmel

Rathronan Protestant Church

I’ve passed this church a million times (I could be exaggerating slightly) over the last few years.  It’s an eyecatching sight perched at the top of a hill over a public house called ‘The Halfway House’ on the Clonmel to Fethard road. Continue reading

23 of 365 pix – Places to visit in Tipperary – The Main Guard, Clonmel

Main Guard, Clonmel

This wasn’t what I intended to post here today… just in case you think I’m copping out with all this night time photography in Clonmel.

Today was just one of those days.  My free iPhone SatNav needed updating, so I hooked up to the WiFi at college and proceeded to update it.  Unfortunately it still hadn’t finished by the time I got to work, and was still updating when I left work. So I decided to use Google maps.

Big mistake!

21 of 365 pix – Places to visit in Tipperary – Westgate, Clonmel

Today’s photo is more an opportunity for me to practise some night time photography, rather than an actual place to visit, although, having said that, the West Gate, Clonmel is an interesting structure.

West Gate, Clonmel

West Gate Clonmel

The West Gate leading to O’Connell street is a reconstruction of what was one of three gates – North, East and West – allowing entry beyond the town walls. It’s fascinating to think that these walls protected the town and kept the Irish out.  Indeed, the Irish made their homes this side of the wall, which in turn became known as ‘Irishtown’.    Some of the history of the West Gate can be read here.

Over halfway into the month of January! Yeehaa!

It was really, really dark when I went to take today’s photo, and it’s probably not the best idea in the world to take photos in a forest when it’s that dark. But…in the words of a famous lecturer in LIT….you can’t have everything…

Today’s photo! (Go on….have a guess!)

Update: Location identified by Conor Kane over on Twitter. Well spotted. It’s a bit off the beaten track and wouldn’t be one of the more well known tourist attractions, but it’s popular among locals who like to walk their dogs or have picnics there in the summer.

As can be seen from the photo below, it really was very dark by the time I got there yesterday.  Thanks be to God for aperature, ISO, Photoshop, and everything else that modern technology has given us in order to make dark photos brighter. The photos might be a little grainy, but they give an idea of what’s there.

16 of 365 pix – Places to visit in Tipperary – Hickey’s Bakery, Clonmel

Due to time constraints I’ve dropped the ‘Guessing game’….well at least for tonight, anyway. It’s very time consuming to edit previous posts and then add new ones, especially when you’ve an internet connection that seems to rely on two very tired, old hamsters running around a large wheel somewhere.  Or maybe one is running against the other – it certainly feels that way sometimes.

And a lot of time is spent pulling my hair out with trying to figure Actionscript and Flash and Illustrator out these days…but that’s another fifty blog posts in itself.

Today’s location is:-

I occasionally drop in here for a latte and a cake. There’s a lovely, cosy atmosphere inside, and the cakes and buns and chocolate goodies are to die for.

14 of 365 Pix – Places to visit in Tipperary – Old St. Mary’s, Clonmel

Two weeks!! Only FIFTY more to go!

This is today’s location.  I don’t think it should be too difficult to identify.

Update: Location identified by Glen (thanks for taking part, Glen!)

Old St. Mary’s Church, Clonmel

Old St Mary's Clonmel

Situated practically in the centre of Clonmel, Old St. Mary’s provides a wonderful opportunity to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the town and enjoy the peace and serenity within its walls.

Below is my favourite part of the graveyard, with part of the old town wall on one side of a neat grass walkway.

9 of 365 Places to visit in Tipperary – St. Patrick’s Church Marlfield

Two wet feet again! I think I might change the name of this blog.

Today’s pic… taken in the freezing fog…at a location not too far away…from me, that is…

7 of 365 pix – Places to visit in Tipperary – Marlfield Church and Cemetery

Today’s 365 pic is not too far from where I live, thankfully. Finding time to take these photos is going to become more challenging as work and college life take over once again.  The joys!!

5 of 365 pix – Places to visit in Tipperary – New Inn

Today’s photo. No hints.  It’s WAY too easy!

(Title updated. Location correctly identified)

New Inn, Tipperary

Taken at 9AM this morning, and I got a big wave from a man out doing his shopping.  I need to get out more often.  I got two wolf whistles and a ‘Hiya gorgeous’ last week.  And, no, I wasn’t walking the dog at the time.
